Our course uses a flexible schedule and unlimited training to ensure a course structure that will work for anyone.
East Coast Divers’ scuba certification course is a 3 part program; classroom, pool, and open water certification dives are all required to obtain certification. It is very common for students to complete their pool and class training with East Coast Divers and finish the certification dives on one of our group trips or at another dive facility in warmer water.
For those that get cold easily, we also offer a drysuit option for local open water certification dives. Drysuits require a bit more training but will keep you MUCH warmer during the local dives.
The flexible schedule or “FLEX COURSE” is designed to fit into anyone’s busy schedule. Once you sign up and have completed the online training, you will complete 2 classroom sessions and 7 pool sessions. One of the classroom sessions is focused on diving equipment while the other is focused on diving science. We offer both classroom sessions every week and you’re free to join any as long as you signup at LEAST 2 days in advance.
When signing up for your course remember that the equipment class session needs to be completed before starting your pool training!
The pool sessions can be similarly scheduled at your convenience. We offer pool sessions on Wednesday nights from 8 pm – 9.30 pm and on Sundays we run two sessions. One from 6 pm – 7.30 pm and the next from 8 pm – 9.30 pm.
We recommend scheduling pool sessions at least 48 hours in advance. While we can often arrange instructors with less notice we will always accommodate a schedule booked 2 or more days ahead of time.
There are a couple of steps before you can get into the water – including completing the online training; your first classroom and completing all relevant paperwork. Most of the paperwork can be done during the first classroom session, but it’s usually a good idea to check over the medical ahead of time and get a doctors’ sign-off as necessary. Remember, if you write YES to any of the questions on the medical a doctors sign off is required. Once your Pool & Class training is complete you are eligible for the Open Water Certification Dives.
Before you can start class you’ll need to fill out some paperwork. Most of this can be done ahead of time, but some of it will have to be done in the shop. The only piece that MUST be completed at the shop is a folder provided by SSI. You will need to fill this particular folder out in the shop as we keep it for our records. You can do this before class – just remember to show up 30 minutes early if you haven’t filled it out yet!
There are a couple of forms that can be done ahead of time, most importantly is the medical release form. Go through the form now and check to see if you need to answer “YES” to any of the questions. If so no big deal – you’ll just need to get a doctors’ sign-off before we can let you in the pool. The doctors’ note is in the same file as the medical – Just scroll down to the next page. Remember “IF” you answer “YES” to anything in the medical it is NECESSARY to get a doctors’ note BEFORE getting in the pool.
Below to you can find an up to date schedule with all of our available Refresher pool sessions. Just remember you need to sign up at LEAST two days in ADVANCE. You can schedule in-person, over the phone or via email.
Interested in a private? We got you covered! Contact the shop and sign-up today!
Private courses are set up slightly differently than regular open water courses. The beginning process is the same – you’ll still be required to fill out the pre-class form, folder, and medical but you won’t be tethered to our schedule. Instead, you can find out whenever works best for you and let us know so we can get the sessions scheduled – we can even schedule your pool training outside our normal pool hours*. Make sure to let us know in advance, as we have to rent the pool and make sure it doesn’t conflict with any other activities going on that day. If you do use the pool when we have it rented that’s perfect! There will be other people in the pool but you (or your group) will be working privately with your instructor.
Students are required to own their own mask, fins, snorkel and booties (if needed for the fins). These basic pieces of equipment should be personally fit to you and your body type. This will create the most enjoyable and productive training experience. If you already own your own and are unsure about fit or are borrowing from a friend we’d be happy to check the fit at the shop for free or at your first pool session. We also personally fit many of our students to their own properly fit gear and keep many different sizes, styles and price points in stock.
