Project Description

We are Boston's premier diving education center for Tech Diving Classes and other scuba lessons in Massachusetts and New England!

About The Course:

The TDI Intro to Tech Course is an introductory course that expands on recreational training by improving dive planning methods, in-water skills, and streamlining existing gear configurations in a controlled and fun learning environment. This is also when we introduce you to new equipment configurations. Our Technical Dive Team gives you 2 options for equipment configuration to work in during this program. We recommend that you choose the configuration that you'd like to continue to dive in. Each configuration has advantages and challenges. Continually swapping between configurations or making drastic changes to either configuration only results in sub-par performance in both.

The course is structured with one classroom session, one pool session and two days of open water diving - one in a pond and another from a boat. If you or the instructor find you need more practice to be comfortable with the system, arrangements can be made outside of the normal class times for additional training and practice. If this is the case then there is no extra charge for instruction, we'll work with you until everyone is very comfortable with the system.

The course cost's $500 PLUS TDI folder and materials. Once you've paid you'll have to register with TDI

*Note* This course only runs from May - October.
To find out more about the online signup process and pre-course work check out the tabs above. Remember, if you get stumped or if you have questions that aren't answered by the website you can always call (617) 277-2216 or shoot us an email at and we'll do our best to help!

Before Class

Note- All the paperwork you'll need, along with a what to do before class checklist is located at the bottom of this tab.

Pre-class intro and TDI Folder

Before you can start class you'll need to fill out some paperwork. Most of this can be done ahead of time, but some of it will have to be done in the shop. The only piece that MUST be completed at the shop is a folder provided by SSI. You will need to fill this particular folder out in the shop as we keep it for our records. You can do this before class - just remember to show up 30 minutes early if you haven't filled it out yet!

There are a couple of forms that can be done ahead of time. Most important is the medical. Go through the medical now and check to see if you need to answer "YES" to any of the questions. If so no big deal - you'll just need to get a doctors' sign-off before we can let you in the pool. The doctors' note is in the same file as the medical - Just scroll down to the next page. Remember IF you answer "YES" to anything in the medical it is COMPULSORY to get a doctors' note BEFORE getting in the pool.

Online form

The Next form you'll need to fill out can be found online and is strictly for our use - so we can get you signed up for the online training correctly. This page is at the bottom with the rest of the paperwork but is password protected. After paying online you will be emailed a receipt - within that same email, we have included a password so you can unlock the form and signup.

Online Training

After completing the form you will get an email signing you up for online training. The online training needs to be completed BEFORE coming to class. If you don't receive an email within 36 hours call the shop, and we'll make sure to unlock the training for you.

What to do before class

As you may have guessed this course is very equipment intensive! There are various ways you can do this course - either with back-mount or side-mount (You should know and be comfortable with whichever rig you're planning on taking down), We offer rental gear for anything that you don't yet have or even complete packages that can be Nitrox ready. If you need any gear besides that listed below check out the rentals page

Sidemount Doubles

Sidemount doubles started as a way for cave divers to be able to fit through restrictions too narrow for backmount doubles. This configuration increased in popularity for divers in many more conditions due to the increased control of the cylinders. While this style of diving has numerous advantages over backmount doubles it is a much harder configuration to master.

Joining a course with the East Coast Divers Tech Team has some great advantages. First and foremost, you don't have to take our word for what gear will work the best for you. Our staff of trainers know that each diver has different needs. If you come to the program with your own set of gear we will coach you honestly on the merits that each piece will have. Anything missing from your technical gear configuration can be borrowed during the full course from our extensive technical gear locker. We want to give you a chance to try different pieces of kit and see what you like or what you may want to change. That way you'll be ready to choose the right gear when you're ready to buy. We also offer great deals on gear purchases to our students and unbeatable service. that's why over 80% of our technical students purchase their gear with us.

Our Training is also the most comprehensive. Because we offer a team of instructors we can meet most schedules and offer training until both you and our instructional team feel confident with your skill level. At no additional cost. Our goal is to create great tech divers who have fun and are excited to continue on their journey to dive new exciting dives.

Backmount Doubles

Backmount doubles are the most classic configuration for any technical diver. This configuration is most popular for open water divers leaving the sides and front of the diver open for other equipment needs. This configuration tends to be the easiest to learn in a short amount of time yet never gives the diver the amount of control that a Sidemount diver has.
