Considered one of the best diving locations worldwide, Scapa Flow is perfect for recreational wreck lovers as well as more technical oriented divers. Scapa Flow is home to the Silent Fleet, The seven remaining wrecks of the German High Seas Fleet, scuttled by their crews in Scapa Flow in 1919, attract divers from across the globe every year. These hulking wartime ghosts aren’t the only underwater attraction though. There is a wealth of other wrecks to explore, and an incredible array of marine wildlife to discover in our cool, clear waters.

We’ll be diving with the crew of the MV Huskayan out of Stromness and staying in Divers Lodge #15. The Lodge has 6 bedrooms, a full kitchen, and plenty of space to lounge post diving. Staying on land allows divers to have more space and comfort than staying on a boat, and to explore and enjoy the beauty of Orkney. The MV Huskyan is known for their through and engaging dive briefings, friendly crew, and purpose built dive boat. There’s even a heated changing room on board !

About the Diving

The main attraction to Scapa Flow is the WWI German High Seas Fleet, entombed in the still green waters since 1919 following their scuttling by Admiral Von Reuter. Check out the great descriptions of the wrecks at https://www.scapaflowwrecks.com/

Today the wrecks of three battleships, three light cruisers and a fast mine-layer – ships that all escaped complete removal during salvage operations – remain on the seabed of Scapa Flow. Lying between 45 and 12 metres under the surface, these wrecks have become imposing and insightful pieces of history.

The dive season in Orkney traditionally runs between Easter and early November, with the sea temperature reaching around 13 degrees Celsius by mid-September. Visibility can be around ten metres during the summer months, but this increases when the plankton dies back during the autumn. Scapa Flow is a natural harbour and diving can take place in wind conditions that would see vessels tied up in much of the rest of the country.
Dive briefings:

This is what we do best – every week is a history week on Huskyan

“Streets ahead of any other UK dive boat. Learn more about wrecks in 1 week than you’ll learn in 10 years of wreck diving elsewhere.” Joli Riley

A natural story teller with the ability to ignite your imagination so that even a non-diver will feel that they know the ships.

Emily brings the wrecks to life using vivid descriptions, exquisite photographs, scan images and drawings. Her multimedia dive briefings and history talks are now famous all delivered in the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere of Huskyan’s saloon.

Ben & Emily like nothing more than talking shipwrecks except maybe diving shipwrecks! With over 30 years combined experience diving the German Fleet if there's something you want to see they can tell you how to get there. If you see something you don't recognise they can probably tell you what it is. If you find something new – they will do their upmost to identify it.
