What it is. A soft silicone mouthpiece with a thin bridge that rests across the roof of your mouth, behind your front teeth. Apeks and Aqua Lung sell it as the Comfo-Bite; XS Scuba and others make similar bridged designs. It fits almost every regulator except Poseidon.

Why divers want it. With a normal mouthpiece you hold the regulator by clamping your teeth on the bite tabs. The bridge takes that job over: the mouthpiece stays put with your jaw relaxed, so there is no clamping and no jaw fatigue. It is a favourite with technical divers doing long dives, and with anyone who comes up from a dive with a sore jaw. The Apeks version is made from a hypoallergenic, antimicrobial silicone that doesn’t taste of anything.

Good to know. It comes in regular and small; the small suits smaller mouths where the bridge of the regular size feels like too much. It is not moulded, so there is nothing to do at home, and it costs less than a Seacure. If you have never tried a bridged mouthpiece, this is the cheap way to find out whether you like the feel.

What we’ll ask you. Which second stage(s), regular or small, fitted or as a spare.
