This Cylinder Inspection Course is designed to promote safety in the care and maintenance of high-pressure scuba cylinders. The Visual Inspection Procedures (VIP) program is intended to demonstrate to the scuba industry, a need to meet and exceed the minimum standards established by the Code of Federal Regulations. In addition, it is intended to train inspectors in the proper handling, filling, and inspection techniques, including the identification of the various defective conditions that can lead to cylinder rejection or condemnation. The course will also cover the operation and repair of valves, cleaning and maintenance and the operation of high pressure compressor systems.

At East Coast Divers we offer the Cylinder Visual Inspection Course as a way for divers to learn more about their equipment and have an opportunity to save money inspecting cylinders if you own a lot of cylinders. Because Visual Inspections of cylinders carries risk (especially for Fill Station Operators and the surrounding personnel) and because inspecting ones own cylinders carries inherent bias We DO NOT accept visual inspection stickers from independent users or groups who are not trained in the use of and actively operating a fill station.

We reserve the right to double check any cylinder that comes through our facility for inspection. We may also ask to trade inspections (you inspect x amount of ours and we’ll inspect x amount of yours) for free. This process is used to help eliminate the use of “on the line” or “risky” cylinders from being filled on our fill station.

The SDI (International Training) VIP Inspector eLearning course serves two main functions:

  • Completion of the online portion of this course meets the OSHA regulations for awareness level training for anyone who handles high pressure cylinders as part of their job duties. Any dive center employee handling cylinders should complete this training prior to handling cylinders. Many divers may benefit from this knowledge as well.
  • Serves as the academic material for the VIP Inspector course, developing a student’s knowledge base and preparing them for the hands-on training components of the VIP Inspector course with their instructor.
After completing the course and receiving your SDI certification you may also be qualified to inspect cylinders for dive operations around the world.

Additional Courses:

This course compliments the Gas Blender / Fill Station Operator program.
