This course, the SSI Open Water Dives are the final step in our SSI Open Water Diver certification process (ISO 24801-2). It is where the student demonstrates proficiency with the skills they learned in the Pool sessions in an open water environment and gains experience diving in open water under the supervision of an instructor. (Please note, we only conduct PADI OW dives on a private basis, or when we have enough interest to form a group for checkout dives)

Why train with ECD?

  • More time in the water. We do a snorkel session and 5 Open Water dives for our certification weekends
  • Small groups. Our maximum ratio for OW checkout dives is 5 divers per instructor, usually lower. You’ll get more attention and less tiem waiting for other students to demonstrate skills, which equals more to to actually dive
  • A less rushed experience. You’ll have a full day plus a half day with your instructor during your certification weekend not just two half days

We run group SSI certification dives the last weeekend of each month from May-October.  The cost for group OW checkout dives is $400 per person.   Our group open water checkout dives include up to 5 dives and a snorkel session spread over 2 days of training on a consecutive Saturday and Sunday.

Availability fills quickly and spots are not guaranteed!

Private checkout dives are also available.  If you’d like to choose to do private checkout dives, please email training@ecdivers.com to discuss booking and scheduling your dives.

Four to six dives will be completed over the course of 2 days. The 2 days of training don’t necessarily have to be back to back or even in the same week. The waters of New England are more than warm enough for divers to dive in wetsuits through late Spring, Summer, and Fall. The wetsuits we use are high quality, warm and stretchy making it easier to put on and take off. Typically suits for New England are 7mm thick. We find that a full 7mm suit with a hooded vest core under it makes diving easy and enjoyable.

Additional open water or pool sessions will require paying additional instruction fees.

Nitrox Add-On

As a certified diver, you will learn that nitrogen is responsible for limiting the amount of time underwater for each dive. Typically the first course divers take after certification is a Nitrox program, BUT as an ECD student you have the opportunity to complete this dive extending cert before you complete your open water dives.

NITROX GIVES DIVERS MORE TIME UNDERWATER WITH MINIMAL TIME OR FINANCIAL COMMITMENT!

As an open water student of ours you’re eligable for a $50 discount off of our nitrox program, saving you both money AND extending your bottom time!

We will get you registered for the materials and a class date. As soon as you complete your Nitrox session and your open water dives you’ll officially be both an Open Water and a Nitrox diver, how cool is that!

This $50 discount is just for currently enrolled ECD Open Water students, so don’t miss out on the chance to save some cash and take advantage of Nitrox diving.

Drysuit Add-On

As a certified Drysuit diver, you will learn the ins and outs (literally) of drysuit diving. A drysuit certification can extend your dive significantly by keeping you warmer and more comfortable in cold conditions. As a New England dive establishment, we recommend that any of our students who are interested in cold water diving earn their drysuit certification. As an ECD student, you have the opportunity to complete this dive extending cert before you complete your open water dives.

AS A DRYSUIT DIVER YOU HAVE TO ABILITY TO EXPLORE THE COLDEST ENDS OF THE SEA AND STILL STAY WARM!

As an open water student of ours you’re eligable for a $50 discount off of our drysuit program, saving you both money AND allowing you to dive in even the coldest temperatures!

We will get you registered for the materials and a class date. You’ll take one additional classroom and one additional pool session in a DRYSUIT. As soon as you complete those and your open water dives in a DRYSUIT you’ll officially be both an Open Water and a DRYSUIT diver!

This $50 discount is just for currently enrolled ECD Open Water students, so don’t miss out on the chance to save some cash and take advantage of Drysuit diving.
