The East Coast Divers Freediving program is headed up by SSI Freediving International Training Director and ECD Managing Partner Nick Fazah. He has years of experience training up internationally ranked competitive freedivers and experienced instructors around the world. Freediving Assistant Instructor Course

If you’re already an experienced freediver and you’re interested in becoming a professional, the Freediving Assistant Instructor (FAI) program is the place to start. FAI’s develop a depth of knowledge in topics ranging from equipment, to safety, and skills, but you’ll be trained in important teaching skills that help you hone your communication techniques and utilize active learning to ensure students are engaged. The SSI teaching philosophy and professional standards are also outlined. Upon successfully completing the program and becoming active status with SSI, FAIs are able to teach pool/confined water based programs including Try Freediving, Basic Freediving, and Pool Freediving. Importantly, you’ll gain valuable experience as you act as a certified assistant in open water sessions for Freediving Level 1 programs and pool/confined water sessions for Freediving Level 2-3 programs.
FAIs can also become Specialty Instructors for programs like Marine Ecology and .

Freediving Level 1 Instructor Course

If you’re already a level 2 freediver training to become a Freediving Level 1 Instructor (FI1) is the next step on your journey. FI1’s have the training in control techniques and experience to take freediving students into the open water environment for training. Take things to the next level by conducting complete Freediving Level 1 courses, Free Immersion classes, and Training Techniques programs. An FI1 is also qualified to Act as a certified assistant for Freediving Level 2 programs and in pool/confined water sessions for Freediving Level 3 programs.

 

Freediving Basic Instructor Course

The Freediving Basic Instructor Program is a 3-day program that trains Assistant Dive Instructors and Open Water Dive Instructors how to teach Basic Freediving and Try Freediving programs. The Basic Freediving Program includes two confined water/pool sessions and an open water session. This program is typically arranged on site at locations convenient to SSI shops interested in developing a freediving program. Before Class

Before attending your class you will need to complete some paperwork. The forms will be emailed to you for your review and can be completed by DocuSign prior to your class.

Before enrolling in a class, you should take time to read and review the Diver Medical Statement Participant Questionnaire. The first page has If you have any YES answers on that page, review the associated section on the Diver Medical Statement | Participant Questionnaire Continued. NOTE: All professional candidates must also have a completed Physicians Approval to Dive form before you can participate in ANY in-water activities. It’s important to note if a physician’s signature is required, only a medical doctor’s (MD) signature will be accepted.

This class also has a helpful online training component hosted by SSI. Please complete your online training prior to your classroom session. If you have not already registered with SSI, look for an email from divessi.com. Freediving Basic Instructor

  • Open to active status SSI Scuba Assistant Instructors or higher
  • Minimum age: 18 years old.
  • Diving medical signed by an MD

Freediving Assistant Instructor

  • Minimum age: 18 years old.
  • Option 1
    • Certified at Freediving Level 1 with at least 50 logged in-water freediving sessions
    • Training Techniques
  • Option 2
    • Basic Freediving Instructor with at least 25 Basic Freediving certifications
    • Training Techniques

Freediving Level 1 Instructor

  • Minimum age: 18 years old
  • Option 1:
    • Certified at Freediving Level 2 with at least 100 logged in-water freediving sessions
    • Training Techniques
  • Option 2
    • Certified at Freediving Level 2
    • Basic Freediving Instructor with at least 25 Basic Freediving certifications
    • Training Techniques

 

Instructor candidates are required to own and maintain equipment suitable for freediving comfortably in the training environment. Instructors must have their own mask, fins, snorkel, computer, exposure protection, weight belts, and lanyards. Specific requirements vary based on practical concerns and will be clarified by the instructor prior to class.

All floats, lines, and training targets will be provided.

Freediving Basic Instructor

  • Digital learning modules and exam
  • The number of classes, hours and sessions per day are set by the individual instructor, based on student needs, student ability and environmental conditions.

Freediving Assistant Instructor

  • 6 digital learning modules & final exam
  • 6 academic sessions
